I have never been one to celebrate heritage that isn't mine, but St. Patty's Day seems to be the exception for everyone else and so I decided to jump on board and make it one more thing to add to my "To Done" list. This Saturday while I was up north at my hometown, I joined my family and some neighbors at a bar in Wisconsin to see a local band that we knew the lead singer of and do it up right for the holiday. It turned out to be an absolute blast! Before we left, we even had Corn Beef Ruben sandwiches just to make it official. The bar itself was a new experience since I had never even heard of it before. The band was also a new experience for me, mainly because of the style of music they played. But overall, this being my first St. Paddy's Day as a legal adult, I'm just glad I finally got to celebrate it with everyone!
Go out on St. Pattys Day? CHECK!
Being able to legally drink on St. Patty's definitely makes it an entirely different experience, I'll agree.
ReplyDeleteAs far as celebrating a heritage that isn't yours... I was downtown Chicago that day and saw LOADS of non-english-speaking and non-white-people sporting their Irish pride, too. Nothing like a culturally exclusive holiday to bring everyone together, I guess!
Being a woman that has some Irish in her (hence the red hair), finds it amusing that our great nation tends to stress the importance of being politically correct. One must never be a person who stereotypes a certain race, gender, age, or disability. That is until St. Patrick's Day. We are encouraged to drink alcohol based beverages to celebrate the Irish holiday. I find the idea that the Irish are stereotyped as ones who pinch and drink a lot quirky.
ReplyDeleteGlad you had a great St. Patty's day! I think I might still be recovering :) I hit up Sully's and Kelleher's which are two Irish bars in downtown Peoria and I had an absolute blast. This has been the first year in awhile that I have been in the state of Illinois for St. Patty's day and I have to definitely say it was the best one yet!
ReplyDeleteSounds fun!! On St. Patty's Day I was in Chicago at the bars and it was literally thousands of people around!!! So fun!!!
